VIMSAR Assistant Professor honoured with IMA's National Academic Excellence Award

Sambalpur: In a significant achievement, Dr Sanjeev Mishra, Assistant Professor Department of Community Medicine, Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) is the first doctor in the state to have been honoured with the National Academic Excellence Award by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The award was presented to Dr Mishra in recognition of his contribution to shaping the future healthcare workforce. This prestigious national-level recognition is given to individuals who have mainly contributed towards education, research and training and for the dedicated work of teachers
Dr Mishra received the award from the IMA President on Saturday evening at the IMA office in New Delhi.
He completed his MBBS from VSS Medical College & Hospital in 2012. Thereafter he worked as a Medical Officer of a Primary health center in a left-wing extremist-dominated area for 5 years. Then he joined his master's program in Community Medicine at VIMSAR in July 2017. Completed the course in July 2020 and joined as a Tutor.
He has been trained in Infodemic Management by WHO & CDC, in implementation research by WHO-TDR, and in Disaster risk reduction by UNDRR. He has been also trained in Community Mental Health at the Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi. Currently, He is currently, enrolled in the Field Epidemiology Training program by ICMR-NIE Chennai.
After receiving the award Dr Mishra said, “The support of family, teachers and friends has made this recognition possible and this award is an inspiration to work even harder."
Dr Mishra is among the top 10 doctors who were honoured with this award in the 2023-24 academic year. Dr Mishra gained attention during the pandemic for his efforts in providing telemedicine services for patients in home isolation. He also runs a free clinic with his wife for slum dwellers in the Samleipadar area of Sambalpur city in the evening from Monday to Saturday.
Dr Mishra has more than 15 research publications in his name which include - Waning of Anti-spike Antibodies in AZD1222 (ChAdOx1) Vaccinated Healthcare Providers, Perception of parents of private school students on measles and rubella vaccination campaign in Sambalpur town, Epidemiology of Fatal Injuries reported in the mortuary of a tertiary care hospital, Immunogenicity of ChAdOx1 (Covishield) Booster Dose in Healthcare Providers, Risk Factors of Pre-eclampsia, Placental Pathology and Maternal Risk Factors for Stillbirth, Complications of Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy in a Tertiary Care Center, Dynamicity and persistence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 antibody response after double dose and the third dose with BBV-152 and AZD1222 vaccines among many others.
According to a TOI news report, His research study on the COVID-19 vaccine found that the Covishield booster shot is extremely effective in elevating the antibody levels against the disease, and on pre-eclampsia, which found that women with AB blood group are at higher risk of developing the disease.
His study on Placental Pathology and Maternal Risk Factors for Stillbirth found that the chances of stillbirths are 5.8 times higher among women who are addicted to the use of tobacco and alcohol than those who are not. He also spearheaded a study indicating that individuals with blood groups O+ and B+ are more susceptible to COVID-19 infection even after two doses of the vaccine.
