MoS Health Counts 13 lakh Allopathic Doctors, 36.14 lakh Nursing Personnel in India, Check Details

New Delhi: As per the information shared by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has a total number of 13,08,009 allopathic doctors registered with the State Medical Councils and the NMC as on June, 2022, the Union Minister of State for Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Rajya Sabha. Assuming the 80% availability of registered allopathic doctors and 5.65 lakh AYUSH doctors, the doctor-population ratio in the country is 1:834.
Apart from the allopathic doctors, there are also 36.14 lakh nursing personnel available in India as on December, 2022. Therefore, the Minister stated that assuming 80% availability of nursing personnel, the nurse- population ratio is 1:476.
The Union Minister also provided the parliament with the State/UT wise list of doctors, who possess recognised medical qualifications and who are registered with the State Medical Councils/ the erstwhile Medical Council of India/ the NMC.
According to the data shared by the MoS Health Dr. Pawar, the maximum number of doctors are present in Maharashtra as a total number of 188545 doctors are registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).
After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu Medical Council has the major number of doctors registered with it. There are altogether 148217 doctors who are registered under TNMC.
Besides, 105799 doctors are registered with Andhra Pradesh Medical Council, 25561 with Assam Medical Council, 48192 with Bihar Medical Council, 10020 with Chhattisgarh Medical Council, 30817 with Delhi Medical Council, 72406 with Gujarat Medical Council, 15687 with Haryana Medical Council, 17574 with Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council, 134426 with Karnataka Medical Council, 42596 with Madhya Pradesh Medical Council, 52669 with erstwhile MCI, 26924 with Orissa Council of Medical Registration, 51689 with Punjab Medical Council, 48232 with Rajasthan Medical Council, 72999 with Travancore Medical Council, 89287 with Uttar Pradesh Medical Council, 10243 with Uttaranchal Medical Council, 78740 with West Bengal Medical Council, and 14999 with Telangana Medical Council.
There are several states/UTs with fewer than 10,000 doctors. Such as 1461 doctors are with Arunachal Pradesh Medical Council, 4035 with Goa Medical Council, 5038 with Himachal Pradesh Medical Council, 7374 with Jharkhand Medical Council, 156 with Mizoram Medical Council, 141 with Nagaland Medical Council, 1501 with Sikkim Medical Council, and 2681 doctors are registered with Tripura Medical Council.

Apart from the State/UT wise break-up of the number of doctors, the MoS Health Dr. Pawar also informed about the number of available trained nurses in States/UTs.
According to the break-up provided by the Health Ministry, the highest number of ANM nurses are available in Andhra Pradesh, which has 140072 ANM nurses. The number of ANM nurses available in the rest of the States/UTs are as follows:
Arunachal Pradesh has 8147 ANM nurses, Assam has 30174 such nurses, Bihar has 19499 nurses, Chhattisgarh has 15213 nurses, Delhi has 5404 nurses, Goa has 424 nurses, Gujarat has 57731 nurses, Haryana has 31989 nurses, Himachal Pradesh has 12007 nurses, Jharkhand has 10900 nurses, Karnataka has 54039 nurses, Kerala has 31646 nurses, Madhya Pradesh has 39563 nurses, Maharashtra has 86426 nurses, Meghalaya has 2339 nurses, Manipur has 4361 nurses, Mizoram has 2570 nurses, Orissa has 75137 nurses, Punjab has 23029 nurses, Rajasthan has 110443 nurses, Tamil Nadu has 64012 nurses, 2954 nurses are there in Tripura, 75671 nurses are in Uttar Pradesh, 9779 in Uttarakhand, 69709 are in West Bengal, 10219 nurses are in Telangana, 236 nurses are in Sikkim, 1477 nurses are in Nagaland, 5264 nurses are in Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar further informed that the government has increased number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats. There is an increase of 82% in Medical Colleges from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of now.
Further, there is an increase of 112% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,08,940 as of now and PG seats have been increased to 127% from 31,185 before 2014 to 70,674 as of now.
The Government has taken various steps to further increase the availability of doctors in the country which include:
- Centrally Sponsored Scheme for establishment of new medical college by upgrading district/ referral hospital under which 108 new medical colleges are already functional out of 157 approved.
- Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase MBBS and PG seats.
- Under “Upgradation of Government Medical Colleges by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme, a total of 75 projects have been approved, of which 64 projects are complete.
- Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these.
- Relaxation in the norms for setting up of Medical College in terms of requirement for faculty, staff, bed strength and other infrastructure.
- DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.
- Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/Dean/Principal/ Director in medical colleges upto 70 years.
The Government has also taken the following steps to increase the Nurses in the country:
- Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for “Establishment of new Medical College attached with existing district/referral hospital” 157 medical colleges have been approved since 2014. Establishment of 157 nursing colleges have been announced in the budget speech 2023-24 in these medical colleges.
- For Nursing Educational Programmes, Student patient ratio has been relaxed from 1:5 to 1:3.
- The land requirement for Nursing Educational Institutes from 3 acres has been relaxed to construct building of 54,000 sq. ft. for School/College of Nursing including Hostel.
- To open GNM and B.Sc. (Nursing) programme 100 bedded parent hospital is essential since 2013-2014. However, this is relaxed for hilly and tribal areas.
- Relaxed norms for teaching faculty to start B.Sc. (N) Programme.
- Maximum of 100 seats will be granted to the institutions for B.Sc.(N)/GNM programmes which have a parent hospital with 300 beds without insisting on Medical College.
- Distance from school to hospital has been relaxed.
- Eligibility Criteria for admission to nursing programmes relaxed.
- As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), there are 13,08,009 allopathic doctors registered with the State Medical Councils and the National Medical Commission (NMC) as on June, 2022. Assuming 80% availability of registered allopathic doctors and 5.65 lakh AYUSH doctors, the doctor-population ratio in the country is 1:834. Also, there are 36.14 lakh nursing personnel in the country as on December, 2022. Assuming 80% availability of nursing personnel, the nurse- population ratio is 1:476.
